Anyhoo I'll post some pics and remeber what I can. A very good mate of mine and I had a pitched battle or Greenskins vs Greenskins.

Points of note - first time out for my big spider. I was all excited until I saw a rock lobber and three bolt throwers :\. The rest of the units are as they appear. My BO Warboss was mounted on a boar in with some night gobbos - - note to self, don't do this again as he can't move through the unit ><. 1st round saw his rock lobber smack the Spider for 6 wounds...ouch. It did, however, last two more rounds before the artillery took its toll. His wolf boys run up one flank and everything else on both sides just marched forward.

The long and the short of it: Spider dies. My Black Orcs crunch his middle and head towards his artillery. Night gobbos survive a flank charge from his giant, which is wiped out by a pump wagon (giggles). His general (with +3A sword) wipe out my entire unit of SO Boar Boyz (that was actually pretty funny). I mop some stuff up and stay away from his General's unit long enough to come off with a win.

Lessons: Big spider means big target :P, but can't wait to roll it out again and see if it can actually do something. Careful where you put your fighty blokes - my General did bugger all in hand to hand cause he couldn't move through his unit. Pump wagons are fun :).Fnurgnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00123461347843267316noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574188258933219401.post-48047301209667005252011-10-14T15:11:00.000-07:002011-10-14T15:14:45.024-07:00Warboss on Boar FinishedI wanted a Warboss on a Boar so grabbed the finecast model....and boy was that a task! Assembling it what rather painful as the fit of the various pieces really was quite teriible. Anyhow, I guess it's ok...a bit rushed like most of my stuff (I need to stop looking at the pile I have left to paint lol).
I need to keep reminding myself about thinning out paint...... :).

Still, I love the model. And I have another one tucked away to try and get a better result with :).
The result is so-so.....took some time to convince a spider to assist and add real spider silk :P.
A couple of kind gents from work have loaned me thier airbrushes to try them out, however if anyone else has feedback on particular types/brands of equipment it would be much appreciated.Fnurgnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00123461347843267316noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574188258933219401.post-58959325411800271612011-07-08T20:38:00.000-07:002011-07-08T20:38:39.966-07:002500 Pts Greenskins vs CWWell I finally got to have a game last night against a good mate. My second under the new rules :P.

My army was as follows:

Black Orc Warboss with 4+ ward save, opponents re-rolling wounds and 6+ ward save to unit from warmachines.

Black Orc Big Boss BSB with Crown of Command.

Savage Orc Great Shaman level 4 on Boar with shrunken heads (extra +1 ward save to unit).

Level1 Night Gobbo Shaman with Dispel scroll.

Level 1 Night Gobbo Shaman with channelling rod.

30 Savage Orc Biguns with additional hand weapon and full command.

35 Night Gobbos with spears, nets and full command.

20 Night Gobbos with short bows and 3 fanatics.

6 Trolls (thanks to my oponent for letting me field unpainted models - very much against our normal rules :P).

6 Savage Orce boar boys with spear, shield and full command.

7 spider riders with short bow, spear, shield and muso.

6 wolf riders with short bow, spear, shield and muso.

Gobbo wolf chariot.

Ideally I would have liked to roll with a mangler squig and a pump wagon, but the models are not complete yet. I don;t field artillery as my army themese tend to be more along the lines of raiding groups that dash out from the mountains for a quick fight then scurry away again.

My General was plonked in with the night gobbo spearmen as was a night gobbo shaman, the BSB and the level 4 shaman joined the savage orcs, the remaining shaman was put down on his own.

My opponenet had:

12 warriors with full command and 2 hand weapons, mark of slaanesh

12 warriors with fulle command, hand weapon and shield, mark of tzeentch

Marauder fast cav

Knights with mark of nurgle and the banenr that makes you frenzied.

Knights with mark of slaanesh

Exalted Hero BSB on chaos steed with re-roll armour saves

Exalted Hero on steed of slaanesh

Lord on chaos steed with +1 to hit and the spewy gift.

A couple of wizards (one mounted).

The Lord joined the Nurgle Knights, the BSB was with the Slaanesh Knights, the wizards were split between the foot units, the Exalted Hero on the steed of Slaanesh was put down on his own.

The game was a pitched battle.

This was my deployment:

For some reason the picture of the CW deployment didn;t come out, but basically the Knights were dwon the bottom opposite my archers and Trolls, then next to the were the Marauders cav and the two units of foot troops. Here is a shot of the Knights:

And another of one of the warrior units:

The CW went first and the fast cav ran up to drag out any fanatics in the archers. Out they popped - I aimed one at the fast cav and sent two forward in the direction of the Knights. The first one failed to hit the fast cav and the other two just bounded towards their destination. Other movement was basically uneventful, as was magic. In my first turn one of the fanatics spun off the board and another ran headlong into the third lol. Three fanatics gone :). The gobbo chariot charged the fast cav and everyone else moved up. The chariot did enough to rout the Marauders (after taking two wounds) but it failed to catch them. Magic was uneventful.

In the warrios second turn the gobbo chariot was taken out by the spit attack of the Lord. All the troops basically stood back waiting for me to commit somewhere except for the mounted wizard that ran up right next to my General and then proceeded to take two wounds off him using that spell where you have to roll a D6 and add your leadership (I failed to dispel it ><).

In my turn 3 the trolls got a long range charge off against the first unit of Knights. The black orcs swung around a bit to face that flank and everyone else moved up.

Well, the frenzied Knights and the Chaos Lord managed to dispose of 2 trolls. In return I took out 3 Knights but I failed to hang around the Trolls were run down (that's what you get for bringing unpainted troops to a game!). One of my level 1's managed to get off the Vortex spell that took out about a quarter of both the foot units. They both stayed put.

In his turn, the Nurgle Knights with the Lord charged the Black Orcs and the Hero on the steed of Slaanesh charged the savage orc boar boys.

I went with double handed weapons with the black orcs to try and at least wound a Knight. Basically he killed a bucket load of me and I killed one of him and I passed my steadfast roll. The exalted Hero killed my champion (he challenged), one combat by one, routed the boar boys and ran the down...oh the humanity.

During my next turn the Warboss's unit charged the warriors with double handed weapons and the savage orc biguns charged the other warriors unit. In a fit of madness I also had the wolf riders and the spider riders charge the exalted hero (thinking that with all those spear attacks I would at least get a wound or two). The Nurgle knights with the Lord finally routed and ran down the black orcs. In the night gobbo unit, My Warboss did 3 wounds to his champion in a challenge and the night gobbos did squat. He killed a bunch of night gobbos in return and the round ended in a draw. At least the biguns chewed through the other warrior unit and ran the down. The spider riders and wolf riders failed miserably, got chopped up and bothe fled. He chased the spider riders but didn't catch them.
At this stage we had been going for a long time (our games tend to be somewhat social affairs) and I called it. Grats mate - I had fun, as always.

Points of note:
Charging the exalted hero with my fast cav units was a big mistake. The gameplan for those two units was to mop up straggling or fleeing opposition units and I strayed from that. Even if I had won combat by a point or two he could well have stayed put and then proceeded to chop me up.
Magic was rather uneventful other that the one vortex spell. My Level 4 basically did nothing as everything he tried was dispelled (the dice were not with me).
My setting up could have been better - I was placing my strong units down too early before knowing where his hard hitters were.
Frenzied Nurgle Kinghts are not fun :P.
For some reason I thought "need something quickish too paint...hmmm maybe something with lots of armour..I know, the black orcs!".
And then the time just dragged on. Firstly it seemed to take ages to get them to rank up properyl. Then I was experimenting with the armour a bit and wanted to try a new colour scheme for the skin (lucky there were only two faces and a bit of flesh showing here and there). Anyhoo I guess they came out alright. Base is not fantastic but I am a novice in that area. I did take the time, however, to put magnets on each so at least the unit is a little more robust when being moved around. Next cab off the rank...big mummy spider :).
.....and yes, I am getting a new camera and some better lighting....these guys are not as dark as they appear.Fnurgnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00123461347843267316noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574188258933219401.post-83829738341621344952011-05-15T02:48:00.000-07:002011-05-15T02:48:09.886-07:00The art of basingWhen I first started collected warhammer miniatures many years ago my bases were very simple - goblin green. After a while I started getting brave and added some flock. It never ceases to amaze me how fantastic some people's bases are..
...and over the years as more material has become available and imaginations have grown the quality just keeps getting better and better. My most elaborate to date has been to add some rocks as well as grass...that's right, 2 different typs of material on the same base...staggering, isn't it. Now I am back into the hobby I will be trying to spruce up the bases a bit more as they really add to the overall look of the model. If anyone has links to suppliers of suitable materials (other than the usual Games Workshop stuff) it would be much appreciated. I have discovered these couple of sites recently and an seriously considering trying some of this stuff out.
Cheap, squishy, poor leadership little blighters that typically raise an eyebrow from across the gaming table with your opponent wondering how many, if any, fanatics are hidden in the ranks. And a battle wouldn't be complete without either a shaman's head exploding in a rainbow of colour or landing a spell against the odds that turns the tide. But sometimes they do frustrate me so.....
Oh the humanity. I am painting up some ealier models where the faces are a bit smaller than the current models and the faces just never come out quite how I'd like. You can probably notice this from the photos :P. My typical approach with greenskins from years back is very basic - gobbo green, dark green ink in the recesses and then camo green for highlights - and this has always worked out pretty reasonable (as least as my skill level goes). But for the gobbos I'm not so sure. My wolf riders are ok but not the night gobbs - main difference is my wolf riders have bald heads and not hoods, so there is more to work with. I am finishing up some archers but plan to do some more gobbos in the future and wouldn't mind trying out some new techniques - particularly when I'm doing big momma spider, as I really want her to be the showcase that she should be. All comments much appreciated!Fnurgnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00123461347843267316noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574188258933219401.post-90636559961133221952011-04-26T05:21:00.000-07:002011-04-26T05:21:31.518-07:00To Squig Herd or not to Squig HerdI've always loved squigs - I love the idea of them and love the figures. Usually in years gone by I have tried to field a herded unit. Since coming back to the game I have read with interest a number of battle reports where the O&G player has fielded a big block (e.g. 30 + 10 herders). True they can pack a punch given their two strength 5 attacks and are immune to psychology but what about the alternatives?
As far as the strength of the attack goes, black orcs can achieve at least S5 (if they charge) albeit with only 1 attack each. However black orcs will get an armour save, are also immune to psychology and can be equipped with full command. Downside is a smaller unit I guess. You could pick a savage orc boyz unit of 25 (for the same points). True the strength of the attacks will be less (unless biguns), but again you can have a full command. Or you could have 30 odd normal orc boyz etc etc. I guess it comes down to sheer weight of high strength attacks?

How about a small unit (7 and 3 for 65 points) and aim them for somewhere where their exploding can cause some damage, as well as perhaps causing a few wounds b4 they go bang?Fnurgnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00123461347843267316noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574188258933219401.post-88760240125258330052011-04-25T17:57:00.000-07:002011-04-25T17:57:30.139-07:00Casual game size?Hi folks, a query regarding game sizes that are popular amongst you all for friendly matches. The chaps I play with all have young families so the majority of our games are played at night. And tournament games are only a few times per year. Typically, our casual game size is 1500 points, with the odd 2000 or 2250 (common tournament size here) left for weekends where our good lady wives tolerate us arriving home in the early hours :). Because our games are very social affairs even a 1500 point affair can take 5 hours (don't laugh...there is usually some serious social chit-chat taking place).Fnurgnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00123461347843267316noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574188258933219401.post-86167839484309343282011-04-25T17:45:00.000-07:002011-04-25T17:52:12.997-07:00The cost of miniaturesHaving come back to the game after a few years away one big difference that strikes me is the cost of miniatures. Is it just me or are the prices getting a little crazy? I appreciate the fantastic detail that goes into the new models these days but still, they are not exactly cheap.

Perhaps it seems more so since when I was previously into the hobby I didn't have five kids to feed lol (surely I can get one or two of them down the mines...). Living in Australia probably doesn't help either. I've found myself recently starting to troll ebay and surfing to find overseas stores to limit the damge. For example, I picked up three boxes of Night Gobbos on ebay for $25, whereas in Oz the retail price is $50 per box, so $25 vs $150...ouch. Also, I'd love to get my hands on the big Spider, but retail price here is $96, whereas I can ship it in from the UK for a little under 2/3 that price. And paints at $6 a pot??

Does anyone else feel my pain?Fnurgnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00123461347843267316noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574188258933219401.post-88416343321134983732011-04-24T17:19:00.000-07:002011-04-25T17:51:54.200-07:001500 Pt GreenskinsOk so my first attempt at an army list after several years (and a few versions of the rules) in the wilderness.
