About Me

Hi Folks, I've been playing Warhammer Fantasy from early days, although have just gotten back into it after being absent for a number of years. This blog is to record thoughts and experiences from amongst myself and friends. Personally, I am currently working on Orcs & Gobbos and also have High Elves, Skaven and a few Warriors of Chaos. Amongst the other chaps we have every other army covered. We are not die-hard competition gamers, but enjoy the game for the social aspect as well as the hobby side of collecting and painting.

The cost of miniatures

Having come back to the game after a few years away one big difference that strikes me is the cost of miniatures. Is it just me or are the prices getting a little crazy? I appreciate the fantastic detail that goes into the new models these days but still, they are not exactly cheap.

Perhaps it seems more so since when I was previously into the hobby I didn't have five kids to feed lol (surely I can get one or two of them down the mines...). Living in Australia probably doesn't help either. I've found myself recently starting to troll ebay and surfing to find overseas stores to limit the damge. For example, I picked up three boxes of Night Gobbos on ebay for $25, whereas in Oz the retail price is $50 per box, so $25 vs $150...ouch. Also, I'd love to get my hands on the big Spider, but retail price here is $96, whereas I can ship it in from the UK for a little under 2/3 that price. And paints at $6 a pot??

Does anyone else feel my pain?

  1. Games Workshop have had major price increases nearly every year for the past couple of years. The latest trick is to reduce the number of models in each box to 10 so you have to buy more to create units.

Best place to buy from down under is Maelstrom Games or Wayland Games in the UK. Both offer free postage and even with the exchange rate prices significantly cheaper than local retailers.

I havent purchased anything except paint and flock locally in at least 3 years.

  2. Cheers for the post. I've been checking out Wayland a bit lately. Much more cost effective given how strong the aussie dollar is at the moment.

  3. Maelstrom also has the adv that if u register with them they send out regular special offers giving you discounts on pretty much everything.

  4. Got lucky on the weekend and managed to pick up 4 new box sets for $80 on ebay. Doesn't happy very often but when it does...smiles :).
